| The government attaches great importance to the problem of heavy homework for primary and secondary school students,and in 2021,issued the "Opinions on Further Reducing the Burden of Students’ Homework and Off-campus Tutoring During the Compulsory Education Stage"(referred to as the "Double Reduction" policy),explicitly proposing to "comprehensively reduce the total amount and duration of homework,and reduce the excessive workload of students.".The "English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)" issued in 2022 also added a discussion on homework evaluation in the "Evaluation Recommendations" of "Curriculum Implementation",further strengthening the management and guidance of English homework in the compulsory education stage.Therefore,the English curriculum reform,especially the homework reform,at the compulsory education stage is not only an inevitable requirement for implementing the "Double Reduction" policy,but also an inevitable way to implement the English curriculum standards.As the main force of the current teaching team,novice teachers and proficient teachers,studying the similarities and differences in homework design between the two types of teachers can provide inspiration for teacher training,especially for the growth of novice teachers.Based on the existing studies at home and abroad,there have been no comparative research results on homework design between novice and proficient junior high school English teachers in the context of "Double Reduction" policy.This study takes six junior high school English teachers(three novice teachers and three proficient teachers)and the text of a unit homework from two students with intermediate grades from a middle level junior high school in Jiangsu Province as the research object.Using a semi structured interview method,three novice teachers and three proficient teachers are interviewed respectively.Subsequently,NVivo 12 plus is used for top-down three-level coding to study the concept of homework of two types of teachers;Based on the homework analysis framework in the "First National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in Education" "Homework Design with a Curriculum Perspective" and the two theoretical foundations of this study,the text analysis framework was adapted.The text analysis method was used to explore the quality of homework design for novice and proficient teachers,and similarities and differences were found,I hope to provide some thoughts and suggestions for junior high school English teachers in professional development activities related to homework design.The main findings of this study are as follows: Firstly,in terms of homework concept,novice and proficient teachers generally recognize the positive functions brought by homework;There are both similarities and differences in the understanding of the specific functions of homework.The two types of teachers have a high consistency in their understanding of the basic and evaluation functions of homework,and there are significant differences in their views on the expansion function of homework.Proficient teachers have a wider and deeper understanding of the expansion function of homework.Secondly,in terms of the quality of homework design,both types of teachers have relatively reasonable designs for homework time,difficulty,and requirements.They have a general grasp of the consistency between homework content and objectives.The design situation on homework types and levels is not optimistic.It can be seen that the "Double Reduction" policy has achieved significant results in terms of time,but the quality of teacher homework design is generally not high,especially in terms of homework layering and homework types,there are many problems encountered,but in comparison,proficient teachers have higher quality of homework layering and designed more diverse types of homework;In terms of homework correction and feedback,the main body of homework correction is teacher correction.The main method of homework correction is to point out errors.However,proficient teachers can allocate correction subjects reasonably based on the type of homework and pay more attention to writing comments and face-to-face comments.In addition,both types of teachers do not attach importance to systematic recording of homework feedback.Generally speaking,proficient teachers are superior to novice teachers in both the concept of homework design and the quality of homework design,which conforms to the professional development rules of teachers.This study mainly provides suggestions for the professional development of teachers in homework from novice teachers,proficient teachers and schools: Novice teachers should strengthen the learning of theoretical knowledge and ultimately form a curriculum perspective on homework;At the practical level,it is necessary to improve novice teachers’ overall ability to design unit homework goals and hierarchical homework,build a systematic homework evaluation system,and ultimately achieve a closed-loop system of "teaching homework evaluation".Proficient teachers not only need to overcome the plateau period of professional development and update the concept of homework,but also need to break through empiricism and scientifically record the homework process.As the main field for teachers to achieve professional development,schools should improve the teacher training and development system related to homework,so that novice teachers and proficient teachers can make common progress in the "education practice" learning community;In the intelligent era,schools can also use digital technology to help teachers grow in the professional development of homework design.Through the two-way efforts of teachers and schools,improve the homework design ability of junior high school English teachers,and help to implement the goal of "Double Reduction" policy.Due to the limitations of subjective and objective conditions,this study mainly has two shortcomings:(1)This study is qualitative research,and although efforts are made to ensure the scientificity and representativeness of the research objects,it still cannot avoid the disadvantage that the conclusions brought by case studies are difficult to cover the entire population;(2)Due to the limitations of research time,research conditions,and my research level,This study mainly focuses on the integrity of the homework system,and the research on analytical dimensions such as homework goals,homework content,homework types,homework stratification,homework evaluation,and homework time is not in-depth enough.It is hoped that more educators will pay attention to the problems existing in the field of English homework in the compulsory education stage,further deepen relevant research in this field,and let homework play its due value,truly "reducing burden and increasing efficiency" for students. |
