The Imperial Academy of Medicine is the central mechanism to manage medicine in Ming Dynasty. Its major function is to provide health care service for the emperor and royal households. The medical institutions’ belonging was confused in previous dynasties. But the situation changed when the Imperial Academy of Medicine established, improved the work efficiency, formed an excessively centralized system of medical administration pattern. Its officials set up resonable and division clear. There were some special regulations for imperial physicians in election, assessment, retirement, promotion and demotion. The system became more standard especially since the Mid-Ming Dynasty. Besides, the imperial physicians not only take in charge of medical care for emperor, crown princes, princesses and concubines of emperor, but also acceped the emperor’s dispatch to provide medical service for some nobilities and foreign guests. To accomplish those functions mentioned above better, the Imperial Academy of Medicine administrated the officals by checking, grading and dispatching. To provide high-qualitied medicine talented persons. It also supervised central medical education, fostered and selected medical talents. The Imperial Academy of Medicine as the central medical mechanism, was subordinated to the Ministry of Rites which had the power of leading and supervising. Government officals played a role of monitoring and assisting. Imperial Academy of Medicine also had close relationship with the Ministry of Offical, Personnel Affairs and the Ministry of Revenue. The Imperial Academy of Medicine in Ming Dynasty inherited the experiences in Tang, Song’s medicial administration and absorbed excellent elements from King and Yuan Dynasties, having a great improvement in playing its function. At the same time, it had a direct influence on Qing Dynasty’s medical administration’s construction. The Imperial Academy of Medicine in Ming Dynasty possessed an important position in our ancient medicial administration system.
