Inheritance, Transformation And Development

In the history of Chinese modern literature, Lin Shu is an influential and controversial figure. In the background of Chinese social and cultural transformation, Lin Shu had excellent translation result and become fashionable for a time, and at the same time because of the conservative behavior in the literary revolution, he gained extreme notoriety. As a representative of Tongcheng School, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Lin Shu’s literary thought not only has inherited, transformed and developed the literary theory of Tongcheng School, but also had inspired and induced the later literary innovation. This thesis is on the center of Lin Shu’s and Tongcheng Schoo’s theories, using several methods, such as close reading, combination of history and literature method, case studying method and comparative method. It analyzes Lin Shu’s inheritance, transformation and development of Tongcheng Schoo’s literary theories. Through analyzing the relationship between Lin Shu’s theory and Tongcheng Schoo’s theories, we can be more comprehensive to see Tongcheng Schoo’s theories evolution in the change of times. It is not only a great significance to reveal the laws of development on ancient Chinese theory of prose, but also can reveal the new literature has closely connection with traditional literature in the20th century.The main part of this thesis is divided into the following sections:The first section analyzes the background of Lin Shu’s to accept the Tongcheng Schoo’s literary theories, including the time of the cultural context and the late literary theory of the Tongcheng School.The second section discusses the concept of "giri" which Lin Shu accepted and developed from the Tongcheng School’s literary theories.The third section mainly discusses Lin Shu’s and the Tongcheng School’s theories on "Testimonies". From brushwork words and language aspects, Lin Shu strictly abided by the requirements of Tongcheng School’s article. At the same time, he put forward his original ideas from three aspects of the article form, such as the "momentum","intonation" and "ribs".The forth section mainly describes Lin Shu’s acceptance and development of Tongcheng School’s style of theory.The last section mainly describes the influence of Lin Shu’s literary theories.In short, in the background of the turn of the old and new cultures, Lin Shu occupies an important position and role on the inheritance, transformation and development of the Tongcheng School’s literary theories. So it is very important for us to study Lin Shu’s literary theory and the relationship between him and Tongcheng School.
