A Study On The Formation And Prevalence Of The "Verb+Noun" Zi Structure In Chinese

The Chinese phrases like “Chi Shi Tang” are frequently analyzed. However, thereis no consensus yet due to the complex semantic relationship between the Verb andthe Object in those phrases when they are analyzed as “Verb+Object structures” bythe scholars. It is assumed in this thesis that there is a significant difference betweenChinese and English in terms of the “Verb+Object structures”. Accordingly, a newperspective on the analysis of the Chinese phrases like “Chi Shi Tang” is attempted toexplain this language phenomenon from the mode of thinking of Ethnic Han with thehelp of corpus. It is to probe into the motivations and principles underlying theformation of these structures in Chinese so that a reasonable model can be achieved inthe explanation of the structure.There are six parts in this thesis. They are as follows:The first part is the introduction in which the background of the relevant study isbriefly reviewed. Thereafter, the research topic is refined. The research goal, focus,methods and corresponding corpus are also introduced in this part.In Chapter two, the contrastive analysis of “Verb+Object structures” in Chineseand English leads to the conclusion that these Chinese phrases are different fromthose in English in that the semantic relationship of the components in these Chinesephrases varies greatly in stead of the simple relationship of doer of the action andreceiver of the action as in those similar English structures. It is claimed that the“Verb+Noun” structures in Chinese do not necessarily equal the “Verb+Object”structures in English.In Chapter three, with the analysis of the relationship between the languagestructure and mode of thinking,“Two-Point View” is proposed to elaborate thesemantic conjoining feature and coding system of Chinese language as well as theethnic trait of Ethnic Han in terms of the mode of thinking. Synchronic perspective isadopted in the analysis of the Chinese “Verb+Noun” phrases like “Chi Shi Tang”.In Chapter four, the motivations of the formation of the Chinese “Verb+Noun”phrases like “Chi Shi Tang” are analyzed diachronically. Social reasons, emergence and extinction of language, the acceptability and conventionality of language are alsoattempted to work out the regular patterns of the formation and variation of theChinese phrases.In Chapter five, the Chinese “Verb+Noun” phrases like “Chi Shi Tang” arefurther analyzed from the pragmatic perspective in terms of economy, common andsolidification character.In Chapter six, it is concluded that the “Verb+Noun” Chinese phrases areoccasionally different from those in English. Therefore, it is unreasonable to stick tothe “Verb+Object” pattern in the analysis of the Chinese phrases like “Chi Shi Tang”.It is known the “Verb+Noun” Chinese phrases prevail in Chinese, which is due to thesemantic conjoining feature and coding system of Chinese language as well as the“Two-Point View” of Ethnic Han in terms of the mode of thinking. The languagephenomenon is also due to the joint effort of social, historical and pragmatic reasons.Finally, the research significance and creativity as well as the disadvantages arestated.
