The Investigation Of University Students’ Character Amnesia

With the airing of a spelling bee show called "Dictation Assembly of Chinese Characters", the slogan "The cultural delivery of handwriting is taking precautions for a nation" not only caused the boom of nationwide participation of this program, but also drawn much attention from linguists and sociologists. More and more people began realizing their reduced ability of handwriting while enjoying this cultural feast. Some scholars pointed out that modern technology brings us convenience, but also resulting in the declining writing ability, and they became worried about the future of Chinese culture.In view of this objective fact, here I got a more detailed analysis about this phenomenon. University students from Central China Normal University and National Kaohsiung Normal University participated in this study, providing mass data through questionnaires. From the statistical calculation of the data, we can draw out some similarities and differences between two universities. The slope may be more or less steep in different areas, but the phenomenon is universal. It does not have different effects on students of different sex, but having different effects on different majors. And there’s no correlation between writing ability and the duration of use of smart devices, like phones or computers. What really influences the degree of character amnesia is the amount of handwriting. Language attitude is also taken into consideration.Taking the experiment result as a reference, there are four main reasons caused university students’low writing ability. First is the subjective choice of individuals. Second, the change of recognition. Third is the objective influence of the development of society and technology. The last reason is the historical inevitability of development of writing instruments. Thus, this thesis suggests some relevant solutions. On one hand, all the people should improve the awareness of the importance of handwriting. On the other hand, country, social organizations and individuals should work together to practice specific measures.Although several solutions are proposed in this thesis, I still consider that these solutions can only relieve the phenomenon. Nowadays with the rapid development of science and technology, character amnesia will become an irreversible trend, people will only strive to seek more convenient writing modes. However, character amnesia does not mean the disappearance of Chinese character, let alone the vanishing of Chinese culture. On the contrary, it is the mark of increasingly spreading of Chinese character. What we have lost is the ability of handwriting, not the Chinese character itself. The progress of technology will definitely make the core of eastern civilization-Chinese character to be much more dynamic. Only become more pertinent to this situation can improve our Chinese awareness, and have Chinese culture developed further.
