The thesis is a practice report on the consecutive interpreting of installment and maintenance of compressor. It describes the interpretation for the American experts of WESCO company who came to China for technical guidance when the author was an internship in Ningxia Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. Based on the interpreting of conference and technical guidance, the report analyzes the cases under the guidance of Relevance Theory. There are five parts in this thesis. Chapter one is the introduction. Chapter two elaborates the background of the project, pre-task preparation and task implement. Chapter three introduces Relevance Theory both abroad and at home. Chapter four analyzes the characteristics of the interpretation about machinery equipment and requirements for the interpreters. Chapter five analyzes the cases at lexical, syntactic and discourse levels within the framework of Relevance Theory. Chapter six summarizes and finds out the problems existing in the interpretation practice. The author finds that there are some problems existing in the interpretation about machinery equipment in terms of lexical, syntax and discourse, such as fuzziness of words and sentences. Therefore, the author puts forward some solutions under the guidance of Relevance Theory. First, the interpreter should make full preparation before the task and get command of the background information for inference as soon as possible. Second, the interpreter should infer the exact meanings by analyzing the context and searching the best relevance. Third, the interpreter should make full advantage of the clues and resources to correctly understand the speakers’intentions in certain contexts, such as the facial expressions and manner of speaking etc. It is hoped that the suggestions and strategies put forward in the thesis would benefit the future interpretation of machinery equipment.
