This report is based on a simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpretation for the lecture Fuliang Porcelain Bureau given in the Lecture Room,a well-known program of CCTV.This lecture introduces the story of the establishment of Fuliang Porcelain Bureau as well as the national administration of Jingdezhen kiln industry in the Yuan Dynasty,and reproduces the early history of imperial kiln in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Fuliang Porcelain Bureau is both professional and literary for its frequent use of ceramic terms and quotation of classics,which brings many challenges to the interpretation.This report discusses accordingly the strategies of ceramic interpretation within the framework of the Relevance Theory.According to the Relevance Theory,interpreters,in ceramic interpretation,need to fully prepare the cognitive context,fully consider the hearers’ cognitive context of Chinese culture and history,find the speaker’s informative and communicative intention,and convey it in a sensible way to achieve the optimal relevance.In view of the difficulties encountered in the practice of language redundancy,logic gap,poetry and ancient terms,implicit expressions,the methods of retaining essential information,adding sentence components,delivering semantic information,and concretizing information are adopted respectively.The interpretation difficulties and interpretation strategies and methods of ceramic interpretation found in this report can deepen the understanding of the law of ceramic interpretation in the academic field,and provide some inspiration and help for those engaged in similar interpretation work in the future,so as to better tell the story of Chinese ceramics to foreigners. |
