A Report On The Translation Of What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect The Practice Of Medicine(Excerpts)

Danielle Ofri, MD, Ph D, as an associate professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, is the author of What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine. Besides, she is a prolific essayist and an excellent physician. She has written many best-selling books which are closely related to the medical field. Meanwhile, Ofri’s writings have been included in Best American Essays twice, and Best American Science Writing 2003. She is also the recipient of the Mc Govern Award from the American Medical Writers Association. In her book, she analyzed the unconscious emotional reactions at the bottom of the doctors’ heart in great depth, and studied the influence of doctors’ emotions on the medical practice. She interpreted the sacer mission as a doctor in the new era from a brandly-new perspective, and how to apply the positive energy to the clinical practice directly and bring great benefits to the patients. This is also one of the most important reasons for translating the book. The original is involved in two areas: medical practice and prose translation, which is quite challenging for the translator during the process of translation.This report describes the actual translation process in great depth, listing some practical problems that the translator has encountered and the translation stratigies and methods adopted during the process. Besides, the translator also reflects on the the whole process of transltion profoundly.This report consists of three parts.Part One is the description of the translation report. The related background information of this book and the practical purpose of translating it are also briefly introduced in this part.Part Two is the main body of the translation report including three chapters: pre-translation preparation, translation process and case analysis. In the first chapter of Part Two, the translator gives a clear explanation of the preparatory work before translating this book which conbines the characteristics of both biographical proses and medical literature. Chapter two is the translation process. In this chapter the translator describes the translating methods and strategies used in the process of translation, the key concerns that the translator has focused on and some translation problems encountered in translation and corresponding solutions. Chapter three is case analysis. In this chapter, the translator mainly discusses two aspects: how to handle the medical terminology in this book such as literal translation, free translation, amplification and so on. In addtion, some examples of translation are selected to expound what translation methods and strategies are adopted in translating such articles with the characteristics of autobiographical proses and medical literature and their directive significance in guiding the translation process.The third part of the report is conclusion. The translator summarizes what has been achieved during the translation process, and analyzes the inperfections existed in translation. Meanwhile, the translator also puts forward some problems and suggestions which are worthy of reflection for the future translation practice.
