Discussions On The Translation Strategies In Translating The Second Chapter Of Seeing Under Skopos Theory

This paper aims at dealing with the translation of the second chapter of Seeing on the basis of skopos theory.The paper consists of two parts:the translation and its commentaries. The first part is the translation of the second chapter "The Warm Beat Means Life" in the famous reporter Chai Jing’s book Seeing, which records her ten-year experience in CCTV, including not only her experiences and thoughts, but also the changing of Chinese society. The second chapter presents what she saw and what she experienced during SARS, for instance, the condition of the wards as well as the work of doctors and nurses at that time.The second part of the paper provides comments on the translation and solutions to the difficult problems in translation on the basis of skopos theory. With a brief introduction to the theoretical background, it deals with the difficulties in meaning and in syntax, and provides solutions accordingly.The translation should be under the guidance of its skopos. In other words, translators can decide translation strategies according to the context or the cultural background. In this piece of translation, the translation methods such as additions, deletions, or revisions can be used to clear theobstructions in understanding. Besides, in terms of syntax, reconstruction of the sentence structure, use of connectives, and predicate verbs can be used to deal with the different syntactic features in Chinese and English.
