A Study Of Openness In Calvino’s Novels

Calvino has become one of the most important contemporary writers in the world, alongside Borges, Nabokov, whom contemporary literary researchers and learners cannot bypass. From new realism to fairy tales and postmodern creation, he devoted his life to the infinite possibility of novel narrative, which has made important breakthroughs and contributions to the developm of novel’s theme and form. He didn’t get the Nobel Prize for literature, but it did not affect his achievements and influence. As his reputation rises, related research also rises accordingly. In Chinese comment circles Italo Calvino’s researchs are the followings: One, focusing on Calvino’s literary theory. Two, studying the fairy tale elements. Three, postmodernity study of Calvino’s works.The researchs has made a profound analysis to his works by the 20 th century literary theory. And this article summarized the domestic researchs’ results and based on a close reading of the text further draw the conclusion :Calvino’s novels’ openness. This article is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the author’s life and his works,summarize related Chinese comments on his work,analyze the word "openness" theoretical origin between philosophical hermeneutics and the aesthetics of reception and discuss their difference.The second part, the openness of the "content", mainly discuss the pursuit of encyclopedic novel, self seeking theme and cosmic view, Indicate his novel has the characteristics of diversity, a combination of various literary elements and novel type.In the third part, this paper studies the his novel on the external structure characteristics, including the permutation and combination, create labyrinth of time and space, and the unremitting pursuit of cartesian for crystal structure.In the fourth part, this paper pays attention to the opennessof the novel’s narrative, then analyzes the intertextuality. Researchs on calvino has been relatively complete, under the background studying the openness of Calvino’s novel has both easiness and difficulty.Senior research are great,which make me understand Calvino’s novel more better; but it’s more difficult for me to bring forth new ideas.So I hope this article can do somepioneering work on the research of Calvino’s works.
