"Zero Time"and The Space

Italo Calvino, the Italy outstanding contemporary writer, got his own unique concept in the wave of modern and post-modern narration, and implied it in his novel. Calvino put his "zero time" concept and spatial narrative strategy on the practice in the novel and created the "crystal pattern novel ". This article is based on the concept of "zero time" and the interpretation of "crystal model" novel characteristics, which analyses the spatial structure of the novel later, and tries to combine Calvino’ s poetic theory to analysis the novel narrative rhythm characteristics of the space model.Except the introduction and conclusion, this article is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is the understanding of Calvino’s "zero time" and the spatial narrative strategy "crystal model". The traditional novel narration in accordance with the order of time and causality of events, From time T-2、T-1…to TO、T1、T2… This reflected the integrity of the story. Calvino believed that the most important moment is only the "zero time"(TO), because it includes the infinities of the past and the future, it makes the novels show the infinite possibilities open structure."Zero time" is an important concept for Calvino’s time of spatial processing. Calvino applied "zero time" to the practice of novel creation and came up with the "crystal model", novel is like a crystal and it is made of many crystals, each crystal is a spatial structure highlighted the novel’s "crystal model" space and greatly enriched the narrative skill.The second chapter is mainly analyses the "crystal model" spatial structure. The Invisible City is about55virtual cities, each city as a crystal, between city and city, the connection between crystal and crystal, with strong space in scope. The Castle of the Intersection by78tarot cards posted different kinds of paths, combined complicated space, reached a strong spatial narrative affection. The Winter’s Night embedded on ten different plots, showed different story plots and collages under different time and space. The Parlour Omar was consisted of27segments of character’s thinking. Novel scattered these fragments together, highlighted the structure of space.The third chapter is an analysis of Calvino’s space rhythm of narrative. Combined with his theory, Calvino in its theoretical writings American speech put forward the principle of "speed" about narration, which reflected in the change of time and space, including the fast rhythm by long short written on the text structure, according to the content of "Lord of the rings", the repetition and displacement series also reflected the quality requirements to the reader.
