Objective: This study aims to understand the grade trends of study engagement in junior college nursing students, and explore the main reasons for the change. Methods: Convenience sampling was used in this research. Totally 291 junior college nursing students(270 effective subjects)from Suzhou Health College were asked to fill out the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Student during their three years’ study.Then,14 students from the 270 effective subjects participated in the semi-structured interview. Results: The scores of study engagement and each dimension(vigor, dedication, attention) were higher in the first grade, lowest in the second grade, and rose again in the third grade, which were also proved by the results of interview again. The change of the grade of the students’ study engagement is influenced by individual factors and environmental factors. Conclusion: The level of junior college nursing students ’study engagement declined with the rising of grade and the deepening of school education, but rose again in the clinical practice, which suggests that clinical practice may promote junior college nursing students’ study engagement. The main reasons for higher level of study engagement in the first grade were good learning habits and the curiosity about new knowledge. The main reasons for lower level of study engagement in the second grade were the increase of academic difficulty and the change of school management. The main reasons for higher level of study engagement in the third grade were the urgent need for knowledge and skills and the vividness of knowledge. Nursing educators should focus on study engagement of the second grade of junior college nursing students and take measures from 3 aspects: first, increase the chances of students’ clinical practice; second, enhance students’ learning self-efficacy; third, enhance the students’ ability of time management.
