The study selected four college students who had been left-behind when he was childby typical and convenient sampling. By having several in-depth interviews with the fourcollege students with left-behind experience, the study tried to learn the developmentcourse of self-differentiation, and explore factors which influence this process and what themechanism is. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed, according to the analysis,the results are:(1) The performance characteristics of the respondents’ self differentiation: they didn’tclose to their parents, the feelings about their parents during they got out to work changedfrom missing their parents to forget them. And the relationship between the respondents andtheir caregivers was alienation, and they had weak emotion; They had strong emotionalresponses and volatile, or showed emotional stability, and could control their emotions;They could Insist on their point of view, or lacked of self; the respondents depended onthemselves, and lack of intimacy in close relations.(2) The development course of self-differentiation: M1was functional independence,without the help of the parents, he changed from helpless and passive to acceptance andactive; M2was conflictual independence, he showed less guilt anxiety resentment inrelation to the parents; F1was emotional independence, and she was an excessive need forapproval, closeness, and emotional support in relation to the mother and father; F2wasattitudinal independence, she changed from obedience to parents advised to have their ownopinions and views.(3) The factors affecting the development of self differentiation was: theintergenerational transmission in family emotion system, the accident case because of theparents’ absence, the connection strength with their parents when left-behind, thecompanion homogeneity and the self assessment about the left-behind experience...
