Over the past twenty years, China has been through the subversive process of opening-up policy, and now we are at the era of rapid transformation. People are facing various impacts and conflicts, and they are living in the contradictions of pursuing new and becoming rich. Therefore, China’s independent documentary was born in this kind of historical period and developing while made its survival out of the system. Since it’s emerging, China’s independent documentary reflects the change of time, record the marks of history and the pulse of society. It is a powerful supplement to the mainstream of documentary as it is investigating the constructions and problems made in the process of modernization with a perspective of human nature. Though the value of independent documentary are covered by the mainstream, but its marginalized existence has a irreplaceable meaning.This article taken China’s independent documentary as the research object, starting from the theoretical background of political economy of communications, analysis the subject’s identity and its circulation channels through image-text, then investigate the forming context of independent documentary in a broadly way. To probe in depth the features of Chinese society that these independent documentaries’showing and how they are showed, thus, to dig deep the meaning of the existence of China’s independent documentary in the context of contemporary Chinese history.In the first part, this article mainly discusses the development track of China’s independent documentary from the aspect of time.Second, in the basis of combing history, this article unscrambled the identity of China’s independent documentary’s focused objects through statistics and text analysis. Delve deeper to the social reality it shows, as well as the sociological meaning behind it.Then, it discusses how independent documentary presents its focused objects as a medium. Through analysis the communication means of China’s independent documentary, to explore the meaning of its existence as an extension of the mainstream media masters. As the mode of existence of marginalization and the bottom of society it shows, is both a way to fight the social mainstream.At last, this article analyses the formation of China’s independent documentary. Probe the complex social context that China’s independent documentary emerged and developed in from a historical and cultural level.The conclusions will summary the social meanings of China’s independent documentary based on all discuss above.
