This is a translation project report for Chapter 7 from Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle against Climate Change Failed--and What It Means for Our Future by professor Dale Jamieson. The source text Chapter 7 discusses the rectification of names and how future policy discussions may play out in terms of those names, and introduces seven policy priorities, three governing principles and one immediate action for the way forward. To better complete this project, the translator has made lots of preparations, including consulting parallel texts, analyzing text type and linguistic features of the original and determing what theories should be applied. In the translation, the major difficulties are the translation of technical terms, the translation of metaphor and the translation of long complicated sentences. Under the guidence of Katharina Reiss’ s text typology and Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence, the translator has strived to figure out some distinctive remedies to resolve these difficultes and achieve the optimal effect. For the translation of technical terms, the translator has consulted many parallel texts, adopted some Internet searching skills and analyzed the context, and finally worked out. To tranlate metaphor faithfully, the translator mainly has took three methods, namely, reproducing the same image, replacing the image and converting the metaphor to sense. And for the translation of long complicated sentences, methods employed are amplification, negation, division and combination. This translation project aims at introducing some suggestions that could be reference for our government authorities and attracting public attention to climate change. Meanwhile, it also lays a foundation for the translator’s future improvement by the lessons learned in the project.
