This is a translation project report on translating the first part of American Higher Education in Crisis?, a book about American higher education written by Goldie Blumenstyk, a senior reporter and editor at The Chronicle of Higher Education. In the first part of the book, Goldie Blumenstyk expatiates upon the issue concerning student. The text type of the source text is informative and the translator of the project takes Eugene Nida’s functional equivalent theory as a guiding principle,adopting proper translation strategies so as to achieve the closest natural functional equivalence and optimum communication. In this report, the author analyzes the text type and linguistic features of the original, and illustrates the difficulties encountered in translation and their corresponding remedies under the guidance of pertinent theories and with concrete examples. At the end of the report, the author summarizes the lessons that he has learnt in the project with an expectation of accumulating experience in translating informative texts.
