Huang Shanran, a poet living in Hong Kong, was born, raised and educated in inland. His poetic language is given priory to with Mandarin and rarely the dialect spoken in Hong Kong and Lingnan. Therefore, his poetry is lack of some local flavor of Hong Kong. Strictly speaking, he was not considered as a native poet of Hong Kong in this respect. However, if we carefully read his poems, combing with his twenty years of writing course, we will find the symbols (signifier) of urban culture of Hong Kong have infiltrated into his poems, such as tea restaurants, peaks of mountains, the Victoria Park, the Kowloon Peninsula, the North Pier, etc. His poetry also reflects the lifestyle and spirit of Hong Kong. He loves this world, pays attention to small things around, and is not afraid of gossips.This paper argues that he was one poet of the South Poets who was influenced by the culture of Hong Kong and had been integrated into it. Therefore, this article explores the impact of urban culture on his poetry from the perspective of the urban culture of Hong Kong, and then looks for the themes of his poetry such as home, life and death, love and so on. This paper divided into three parts, respectively is the preface, the body and the conclusion.The preface part discusses the role of cultural factors in literary creation, and then introduces Huang Shanran’s poetry creation in Hong Kong writing. This part makes deep interpretation of the definition of culture first, then sorts out his poetry, and finally draws in the Hong Kong cultural expression of Huang Shanran’s poems.Through textual analysis, the first chapter discusses the cultural symbols of Hong Kong in his poetry writing. The first section describes the status of Hong Kong’s scenery in his poetry; the second discusses the urban lifestyle of Hong Kong appearing in the poetry; the third explores the influence of the ideology prevailing in Hong Kong, where is a collection of cultural diversity, in his creation of poems.The second chapter, explaining his poems deeply from the perspective of the themes, digs with the signified or themes of his poetry, such as home, survival and love under the background of Hong Kong. The first section is about the Home Consciousness in his poems such as home, harbor, family, household chores and so on, which often becomes the eulogizing and writing objects. Thus, the Home Consciousness occupies an important position in his poetry creation. The second part discusses Huang’s attention for life. In his poetry, we often see the status of Filipinos’ life, the commuters’working condition and psychological status, the description of the corner shop, the confusion and helplessness of the unemployed, and so on. We can feel the burning heart of a poet as well as his concern for the animation of marginalized groups. The third briefly described Huang’s thinking of the surviving, which includes the meaning of his existence and human beings, the inquiry of "I", and so on, as Huang’s words in Meditating by the Swimming Pool:" I split my life into several blocks, which would be full of the meaning of break, that one is survival, one is reality, one is family, and one is poetry".In the third chapter, this paper analyzes Huang’s poetry creation from the perspective of aesthetic and then excavates the aesthetic qualities of his poetry. Section one expounds the traits of colloquial from the aspects of the poetry language.Section two talks about the use of images in Huang’s poetry.The fourth chapter describes the contemporary South Poets under the influence of the cultural conflict and mixture, expounds the cultural conflict of Hong Kong and compares the difference between Huang and other poets. In 1980s, with the relaxation of the environment in inland, a part of poets and writers immigrated to Hong Kong by many ways, such as inheritance. As a consequence, their creative styles were always different. This chapter will select some South Poets to be commented and compared with Huang, such as Wang Yitao, Fu Tianhong, Shu Fei etc.The epilogue discusses the significance of Huang, as a young South Poet, in the history of contemporary poetry in Hong Kong. This part observes from the visual angle of Huang’s writing, compares the contemporary poetry writing of Hong Kong, and argues for the significance of Huang.This paper is based on the comprehensive and detailed information, and studies Huang’s poetry by using text analysis, combining with the research method of cultural criticism from anthropology, history, sociology, linguistics and other related knowledge.
