Kiran Desai(1971-) is a young female writer in India ’s contemporary literary, she was also a representative diaspora writer. Her works reflect the social status and crisis of India, and the impact of conflict to the east between eastern and western culture. Although Kiran’s creation was not so much, only two novels, but all have been well received in the literary world. In 2006, Kiran won the 40 th "Man Booker Prize" because of her second novel The inheritance of loss. Kieran is good at acquiring writing inspiration from his own life experience, we can see the shadow of the author herself from part of the protagonist in the works. This paper mainly take Kiran’s The inheritance of loss as the foundation, after I analyzed the image of India out of her work, I summarized her emotional attitude to Indian, her understanding about the conflict between eastern and western culture, revealed the author’s point of view to the problems. It has a certain value for further understanding the Indian society, exploring the development of eastern and western cultures. This thesis consists of three parts, introduction, text and epilogue. In the introduction part, I introduced something about Kiran, summarized the study about Kiran at home and abroad, and pointed out the significance and value by studying India’s image in Kiran’s work.In the first chapter, I analyzed the India image which was acted as “the other”. As a diaspora writer, Kiran has more complex feelings to India, both cordial and familiar. Kiran spent her childhood in India, where there were her sweetest memories; After moving to the west, the home became distant "the other", the conflict between eastern and western culture let her get a new understanding of India. Based on her own experiences and observations, she told the story about those who moved to the west and didn’t realize their dreams. In the second chapter, I analyzed aphasia of Indian society. The impact of the western hegemonic culture shook the Indian’s cultural viewpoint and way of life, whether the one in India, or those moved to the west. Many Indians were willing to surrender in front of a strong culture, they gave in their faith and tradition actively or passively, become aphasiac. In the third chapter, I revealed Kiran Desai’s cultural viewpoint. When telling the story, Kiran also saturated with her view about society, culture, and policy. The problems reflected in Kiran’s works such as racial discrimination, ethnic riots, issues of immigration, which is also needed to be concerned throughout the world. In conclusion, I mainly summarized the main points of my paper. Kiran conveyed her own cultural viewpoint through her India’s image. I also pointed out the shortcomings of my paper, it is about the analysis of the background of the writer, and put forward the idea for further research in the future.
