Tranquility is always the other side of the world that people want to be,it's remoteness proves the impregnable of Hullabaloo. This contrast is particularly evident in novels “The Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard ”(1998)and “The Inheritance of Loss”(2006),which written by the Indian writer Kiran Desai, who was the booker prize winner in 2006.In her first novel,Hullabaloo is presented clearly on the surface;by the second novel,Hullabaloo is hidden in the atmosphere of gloomy and downcast, becoming more profound and unbearable. At the same time, the desire of Tranquility is always here. The two themes constitute the distinctive characteristics of Desai's writing of contemporary Indian society and the state of being. In addition to the Introduction and Conclusion, this thesis divided into three chapters. The first chapter focuses on “Hullabaloo”.From the overall environment of Kalimpong and Shahkot and the target characters,in view of the Colonialism,Neo-colonialism and the great changes of domestic, this part discusses the chaos of overall situation in India and people's deep loss and restless, which force them want to escape the state. From the traditional way of life that so different from the social Hullabaloo in novels, the second part analyzes those behaviors that Indian following arranged marriage, living in the closed and self-governing countryside and bazaar, inheriting innate belief and ceremony, firmly believing and practicing the dharma ethics. Both social regulations and ethical doctrines are base on the concept of Dharma and emphasize collectivity,self-control and harmony, thus bring up the collective stability of the traditional society of India. But the stability is built on the absence of individual freedom,so it cannot be a safe haven for modern Indian. The third part centers on“Tranquility”.It is both a continuation of the traditional pursuit of stability and a response to the noisy world.Considering the prominence of individual consciousness in modern India,Desai's novels show the mindset that Indian could apply the ancient wisdom of unity of being, which comes from nature, and then the harmony between individual and the world can be achieved through self-transcendence,love and acceptance, thus to peaceful state. On the one hand,Kiran Desai has a keen sense of the Hullabaloo of modern life in India;and on the other hand, she retrospects the Indian tradition and presents the idea of Tranquility. Both in thoughts and artistry her novels are get to the high level in the filed of Contemporary Indian English literature,so she gains recognition at home and abroad. In this thesis, there is an in-depth study on the themes of Hullabaloo and Tranquility in Desai's novels, which shows some innovation for lack of attention.
