Abstract/Summary:
As a system, kinship terminology is linked with such a series of social and cultural issues as marriage, family, property inheritance, kinship rights and obligations and so on; therefore, it has always been the issue that concerned and researched by anthropologists and linguists domestic and overseas. The one who earliest studied kinship system, marriage and family through kinship terminology was a famous American anthropologist named Morgan. In his book Human Blood Family and Marriage System(1871), he sorted and studied kinship terminology of more than half of ethnic groups around the world. He firstly promoted kinship terminology to kinship system, and then studied kinship system with marriage and family, which lay a theoretical basis for studying kinship terminology. There are two kinds of kinship terminologies in the world ethnic group: one is class type----only indicating generational hierarchy, but not including paternal or maternal, lineal or collateral, and order; another type is descriptive kinship terminology---- paternal or maternal, lineal or collateral, generation in the family and pecking arrange in the same generation are all clear.This paper gives a comprehensive analysis of kinship terminology in northern Thai dialect. Firstly lists all the kinship terminology in northern Thailand; and then classifies and summarizes them according to their pronunciation and structure, etc.,and analysis their characteristics according to their. Besides, this paper also analysis its relation with northern Thai language by describing local culture.Northern Thailand is also an interesting place. The scenery there is beautiful, the people there are honest, and learning atmosphere is also quite strong.The analysis and comparing for kinship terminology in middle and northern Thailand in this paper is not only helpful for learners of Chinese and Thai language to master and use kinship terminology in middle and northern Thailand more accurately, but also can also help people who in interested in Thai language and culture to have a rough idea of cultural difference between middle Thai and northern Thai, which provides some help to learners of Chinese and Thai language to a clearer understanding on the relationship between culture and language.
