| Based on the project translating the whole book, Great Australian Railway stories written by Bill Swampy Mash, this report analyzes common difficulties as well as possible strategies and solutions in English to Chinese translation. In his works, author, Bill Swampy Mash, born from the railway family, introduces all kinds of customs and cultures along the great Australian railway with unique perspective. The text is involved the structure of railway, railway administration, railway transportation and other related professional terms. It is of great reference to popularize Chinese railway culture. Viewing around the book, therefore, from the perspective of historical development of Chinese railway, it is not difficult to draw the following conclusion: different understanding of the railway is subject to the different systems of economic, social and cultural factors.To prepare for the translation, the report attaches great importance to original text analysis, the main tools to assist the translation task and the solution to term translation and relative materials research. It also presents the difficult points of translation by selecting typical examples for further analysis from the following three perspectives: impersonal and personal subject, information redundancy and supplement on emotion. Meanwhile in the process of technical term translation, strategies of literal translation, free translation and transliteration are used for accurate expression. In the process of sentence translation, strategies of sequential method, sentence deconstruction are used on sentence reconstruction for an accurate representation of the original text.Based on the analysis of the report, the following findings are put forward:(1) full preparation of translation is of great importance for translation practice;(2) as translation is a kind of communication between different cultures, it is necessary to choose different translation strategies to make the translation version more accessible to the target readers;(3) it is suggested that translators should have some relative disciplines backgrounds and a wide encyclopedic knowledge will help to catch the points of the author and reduce readers’ misunderstanding. |
