A Translation Project Report On Cultural Hybridity(Chapter 4,chapter 5) By Peter Burke

This is a translation project report on Peter Burke’s Cultural Hybridity(Chapter 4 and Chapter 5), published by Polity Press in Cambridge. The author, Peter Burke holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Cultural History and Fellow of Emmanuel College. Chapter 4 discusses possible responses for cultural exchange, while Chapter 5 discusses possible futures or outcome for the cultures of our planet. The main contents of this report are divided into four parts: Part One is the introduction of translation project, including project background, objectives, significance and framework. Part Two is introduction of the source text, including the author, main contents of the source text, linguistic features and evaluation. Part Three is the brief introduction of Peter Newmark and Text Type. Based on language function, Peter Newmark divides text into six categories. Cultural Hybridity falls into the text of informative function, and Newmark suggests communicative translation for this type of text. Part Four is the analysis of the source text based on the theory, the translation difficulties, and methods. Methods for translation mainly are various translation techniques. The last part of the report concludes preparation work, the afterthoughts, experiences and unsolved problems.
