Translation Of Hybrid Text

This thesis is a translation practice report aimed at China Dolls written by Chinese American writer Lisa See,which tells a story of three Chinese dancing girls in nightclubs of Chinatown in San Francisco during the WWII.Chinese American literature works describe the life of Chinese Americans in America from their own perspective and reflects the history of conflict,absorption and fusion between Chinese and American culture.Because of the textual feature of hybridity and diversity,its Chinese translation attracts more and more attention from translation circle.Under the guidance of the concept of hybridity,the thesis discusses the translation methods of hybrid text through an analysis on the three kinds of hybridities,that is linguistics,cultural and literary hybridity.This thesis gives two conclusion: First,alienation and domestication should not be adopted apart during the translation of hybrid text and should be flexibly used in particular cases;Second,based on source text analysis and extra-textual considerations,relatively alienation is adopted in general.Alienation is suitable for translation of cultural hybridity and literary hybridity to increase the readability,while domestication is suitable at syntactic level to ensure the smoothness and coherence.This translation practice proves the advantage and rationality of hybridization translation strategy in the Chinese translation of Chinese American literature featuring hybridity and will provide reference and guidance for the future translation of Chinese American literature.This thesis consists of four chapters: the first is the description of the translation task.The second illustrates the translation process,involving preparation before translation,theoretical framework and translation difficulties.The third is the main part,which introduces how to adopt proper translation methods on linguistic,cultural and literary hybridity specifically.The fourth concludes the translation practice through pointing out findings,limitations and future research direction.
