This is a translation project report on “Chapter 2 and Chapter 3” of A Mind for Numbers How to Excel at Math and Science. The author was Barbara Oakley, a professor of engineering of University of Auckland, who also disliked math at first,however she cultivated the interest of math and completed this book through the study of the thinking mode when solving math problems. These two chapters introduce the activities in our brain when we are thinking, the conversion between two kinds of thinking modes(focused mode and diffuse mode), the importance of diffuse mode for learning math and science and some methods to shift between focused mode and diffuse mode.This report is composed of four parts. Chapter One is an introduction of the report including the background information of the project, the significance of the project and the layout of the report; Chapter Two discusses research background of the author and analyzes the source text including: main idea of the source text and the features of the source text, and the last part is theoretic application; Chapter Three is about translation difficulties and methods; Chapter Four is conclusion.
