Where there is international trade, there is international business contract.Thus, translation of international business contracts is one of the most importantand useful types. However, compared with other text translations, the businesscontract involves substantial expertise questions such as professional words andsentence structure which impose a higher challenge on the translator.The case comes from a contract translation in the medical field. The authorsolves business contracts translation problems from the functional stylisticperspective. With Halliday’s "Functional Stylistics" as the theoretical guidance,translation strategies and principles as the practical instrument, and contract textof the translation project as the case study, the thesis presents certain solutionsfor the typical problems in the business contract translation.This thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction.Chapter two is the description of translation project. Chapter three is thedescription of process, including preparation of translation schedule, paralleltexts and relevant expertise before the translation, use of glossary and searchtools during the translation, and conduct of self-calibration, proofreading, andcustomer satisfaction surveys after the translation. Chapter four is case studies,dealing with the typical cases from ideational, interpersonal and textualfunctions respectively. Many translation questions will be discussed such asprofessional terminology, tied synonyms and action words from ideationalfunction, mood expression and modal verb from interpersonal function, andinformation consistency from textual function. Chapter five is the summary forthe translation practice, summing up the previous analysis, drawing theconclusions and reflecting on some defects in the thesis.
