The theory of Ge and Bu-Ge, as two critical terms for literary study which were putforward in Commentaries on Lyrical Work by Wang Guowei, is alway kept in the threeeditions of Commentaries on Lyrical Work, and it plays an important role in the book, and interms of importance, it is second only to realm. Reviewing the development and origin ofthis Chinese character Ge, its original meaning has something to do with cliff and step, because they have tall and abundant appearance or show the difference between the holy andthe profane, so they have the function of interruption and barrier. From ancient times untiltoday, and from poems to articles, there is little change in the meaning of this Chinesecharacter Ge which is usually used to show the barrier, estrangement and distance in time, space and emotions of human being. Then connecting it with the context of Commentaries onLyrical Work, Ge and Bu-Ge can be defined from three levels including language, imageand realm. In this sense, Bu-Ge means directly and vividly presenting emotions and imagesto readers through natural and clear language, to ensure there is no interval or distancebetween the author and readers, and no interruption or barrier between the works and readers, which can make readers resonate to the works. In short, there is a realm. Observing andstudying the thoughts origin of Ge and Bu-Ge, it can be found that they have somethingto do with Wang Guowei’s artistic view of focusing intuition as well as his literature viewof pursuing realm. In a word, Bu-Ge, as a clear and thoroughly understood state, is notonly Wang Guowei’s personal aesthetic ideal, but also an accepting state of ideal, and itsattention for intuition aesthetics and reader reception, as well as its inspiration for artisticcreation still can be used for reference today.
