In the context of high speed development of economy and high attention to historiccultural heritage under the reform and open policy, the study discussed the capitallocation, the design plan, layout characteristics, imperial palace system, constructiontechnology, the stone carving art, further on the evolution characteristics of the MeridianGate structure in Nanjing and Fengyang. Through the origin, development and the latestchange of the Meridian Gate structure system, we hope to get some beneficialenlightenment and to provide some help on contemporary China ancient architectureprotection.The main body of the paper is divided into three parts. The first part brieflyexpounds the origin and the paper theme. The second part mainly clarifies the evolutionprocess of the city gate from the Han Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty which givesprominence to the key points to the different structure of the two cities and the inherentrelation between the two cities as well as well as the coming crisis and protectionmeasures at present. Based on the discussion on the theory and field, we found that theMeridian Gate actually could be traced back to the Tang Dynasty, the subsequentstructure is the result of continuous evolution based on the inheriting the Meridian Gatestructure in the Sui and Tang Dynasty until building the middle capital in Ming dynasty, itreached the peak and created the brand new imperial palace building system. The processdevelops from the original role of decoration to the production reflecting the royalmajesty, which has the profound influence to the ancient Chinese imperial palacearchitectural layout and the current architectural layout. Last but not least, the third partmainly discusses the current situation and the protective actions. It stresses the theory ofthe nature and society harmonious development and common development, as well as thecontemporary significance of the historical and cultural relics.
