Founded by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in1984, TED Conference is dedicated to "Ideas Worth Spreading". People of great minds are invited to talk about their experiences in different scopes, aiming to spread ideas. In2006, TED speeches were updated to the Internet and have won more and more English learners in China, which shed light on its translation study. Although subtitle translation of TED speeches has got such a great considerable attention in China, it is still a relatively new genre in translation studies, which make it has rarely ever been touched. In the light of its far-reaching influence in China, it becomes imperative to study it.In this thesis, the author makes a comparison of subtitling translation between TED speech and fictional feature films and TV series to investigate into the similarities and differences and make an analysis of its practical value and significance. As the theoretical framework of this thesis, the Skopotheorie, started out in1970s, has been applied into the translation studies and attracted certain attention. Unlike the traditional translation study, its study owns a new viewpoint. Skopotheorie regards translation as a purposeful action and stresses on the subjectivity of translators. According to the Skopotheorie, translators can adjust their methodologies of translation to achieve different kind of purposes and effects. Therefore, translators can simplify the subtitling in TED speeches to avoid the information deficiency in terms of different purposes. If necessary, translators could give consideration to the coherent rule, the fidelity rule and the principle of function plus loyalty in the light of different situations and contexts. In this thesis, the author picks out three representative TED speeches that is relevant in simplification model of subtitling translation. From the perspective of Skopotheorie, it analyzes its four principles to discuss TED speech and its research significance. In a further way, it also reaches the translation strategies of simplification model with the explanation of examples in TED speeches. This thesis aims at the subtitling translation in TED speeches restricted by time and space and discusses the simplification model with examples extracted from TED speeches from the perspective of Skopotheorie. The study of Skopotheorie theoretically makes a great contribution to the explanation of the simplification model in Ted speeches, and provides the translation strategies in subtitling translation, while its application verifies the possibility of the simplification model in subtitling with the questionnaire.
