| With the communication between China and other countries in the world, the input and output of cultural information are becoming more and more frequent. The external dissemination of films and TV shows has become an important window for cultural exchanges between countries. If You Are the One,a blind date TV program that reflects Chinese social culture, has been successfully introduced to Australia. It can be viewed that English subtitle translation has played a very vital part in the process of its transmission and acceptance. Therefore, research on the subtitle translation of the program is of great importance for the external dissemination of Chinese culture. There has been a lot of research on subtitling translation in the field of translation studies. However, there has been insufficient research on subtitling or translation in the framework of communication theory. The translation is inherently communication. To investigate the specific translation process under the relevant concepts of communication studies can help broaden the view of translation research. For example,in the process of the cross-cultural communication of language transfer,as the main agent of the communication process, how does the translator deal with the content of the communication? Through what channels of communication can the information be effectively disseminated and well-accepted? And what kinds of translation strategies can be useful? These issues are very significant for promoting the external cultural dissemination of translation and relevant information. The above questions are precisely involved in the research of this thesis. The purpose of the thesis is to research the external dissemination of If You Are the One as a systematic translation and communication process under the theoretical guidance of Lasswell’s 5W [who(says)what(to)whom(in)which channel(with)what effect] model of communication, and analyze how the translators deal with the subtitles involved in folk culture,cultural-loaded words, and witty words during this communication process, and how to effectively convey the content to the Western audiences from a different cultural background in the limited space and time.By studying and summarizing the specific subtitle translation strategies of If You Are the One,it is hoped to provide some inspirational suggestions for the external dissemination of such programs in China. It is found in the study that, the translator,as the main agent of communication, fulfills the role of “gatekeeper,” and first rewrites some culture-loaded expressions and weakens some aspects of cultural conflicts between the two cultures. For the processing of information in the communication process, the translator tends to use two strategies of flexible adjustment and free translation to avoid interference caused by cultural elements.Based on the characteristics of the media,it is concluded that the translator adopts the translation strategies of condensation and deletion to meet the characteristics of subtitle translation.Furthermore, from the perspective of audience and communication effect, the translator uses translation strategies of amplification and shift of perspective to make the translation fit the ideology of the target readers.Under the guidance of the 5W model of communication, the analysis of the above strategies indicates that they can ensure that the audience obtains sufficient and necessary information, and thus ensure the program’s transmission effect. Finally,in the light of the 5W model framework and the program’s external communication process, this thesis introduces some aspects of the Chinese TV program’s external communication that can be used for reference from the program’s translation experience. The transmission of Chinese TV shows through translation is a typical cross-cultural communication activity, which can be researched by employing relevant concepts and theories in communication studies. It is hoped that the research results of this thesis from the perspective of Lasswell’s 5W model can provide some ideas on the future translation of this kind of TV program. |
