An Exploration Into The C-E Translation Of The Chinese Big-four Banks’ Webpage Profiles:Perspective Of The Functional Translation Theory

With the development of globalization, Chinese banks are striving to improve themselves and go to the outside world, thus it is of great necessity for them to translate their webpage profiles into the counterpart English versions in order to attract more international business. During these years, the study on the English translation of bank-related materials has attracted much attention from scholars, whereas most researches are conducted from the perspective of financial terminologies, long sentences and signs, few are on the translation of bank webpage profile (BWP, henceforward) under the Functional Translation Theory.Many BWPs at home and abroad are collected from the Internet to form an authentic and ample corpus. Through comparative study, the similarities and differences between the Chinese BWP and English BWP are related, and the shortcomings in the current English translation are pointed out. The unsatisfactory translation inevitably does harm to the external propaganda of banks and hampers the realization of BWPs’ intended purposes. Banks should pay more attention to the improvement of their BWPs’English translation quality.The research is based on the framework of the Functional Translation Theory. It highlights the importance of the theories of Katharina Reiss and Hans J. Vermeer in the English translation practice of Chinese BWPs. On the basis of discussing the problems arising in the C-E translation of BWPs, this thesis provides specific suggestions to satisfy the demand of the receivers better and fulfill the bank’s external propaganda expectation. What’s more, the thesis also tries to offer references to the translation of other similar texts.
