| Translation, as a complex and cross-cultural language communication activity, involves not only inter-lingual transference but also diverse cultures, cognition, and thinking patterns and so on. A high-quality translation cannot be got without a thorough understanding of original context. Context has a constraining effect in reading and expression in the course of translation. All in all, there is a strong correlation between context and translation.Context of situation, initially proposed by Malinowski, can be traced back to1920s. Since then, it has been drawing an increasing attention from both linguists and translation theorists and got further improvement. The relation between situational context and translation has also become the object of study which is considered vital and significant. Taking relevant researches by predecessors for groundwork, this thesis explores further the role played by context of situation in understanding original text.Reading is the basis of translation. A proper reading of the source language is a prerequisite for generating complete and accurate translation. In the process of reading and generating, context plays an important role. In this thesis, the author, according to the context of situation under Systemic Functional Linguistics and translation practice of her own, introduces in the first place the history of context of situation and previous studies on reading in translation and discusses the roles of context of situation played in understanding the original language and generating target language in terms of prediction and decision-making, with the purpose of improving accuracy of translation and providing a guideline that enable the translator to understand language better. Context of situation is described under three headings:field of discourse, tenor of discourse, and mode of discourse. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to analyze original text and make predictions based upon context of situation. |
