Study On Huangtingjian’s Poems On Poetry

Huang Tingjian achieved great success in the field of literature, especially in the field of poetry onwhich he find a new path and formed his own style. Hu Zi appraised in his A Clump of Speech of TiaoxiYuyin,“Since Huang was dispatched Qian Zhou, his writing has been deemed as the masterpiece in theworld for it has been particularly excellent and unconstrained. And Huang has been the only person whoachieved the summit of this success, since the rise of Song dynasty.” Huang’s poem is indeed themasterpiece among the poetry in song dynasty and he emphasizes on the rules of poem writing, therefore,the contemporary and later generations are active to follow and imitate, and gradually the Jiang xi school offormed. As the pioneer of poetry, Huang Tingjian’s poems and poetics has been studied and discussed bylater generations all the time. Due to the rich subjects, wide comments, and many poetics involved in hispoems, this thesis regards these more than two hundred words of poems on poetry as the research subjectsto analyze the characteristics and poetic theories in the perspective of some fine points and the diachronicstudies.This thesis includes three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.In the introduction part, the literature review, methodology and creative value of this research arepresented.The body part includes three chapters. In Chapter one, studies on Huang Tingjian’ s poems on poetryare combed as a whole., this thesis expounds the value of the poems of Huang’s seniors and friends inchronological order from three aspects—poets, poems and their critics on their own works. Apart fromtheir positioning on their own poems, some techniques of poem creation are also analyzed. In chapter two, starting from poems of Tao yuanming, Du Fu, and Su Shi, we make a carefulclassification and generalization, from which we may see Huang admires Tao yuanming’s “authenticity”,Du Fu’s “faithfulness”, and Su Shi’s “change” greatly, so he learns hard from them and finally succeed andbecome the master at his time.In chapter three, the poetry theory reflected in poems are studied. We find two major properties inpoems on poetry—“freshness” and “taste”. In the process of discussion on this theory, we try to track backto the source by means of analyzing text details and historical background of the poet.In the conclusion part, the whole thesis are reviewed and generalized.
