On the basis of the Skopostheorie, this thesis probes into the translation of the culture-loaded words inthe English version of Yu Dan Lunyu Xinde. Different from the previous researches on the English versionof Yu Dan Lunyu Xinde that are from the perspective of either Rhetorical Situation or Toury’s norm theory,this dissertation attempts to research the translation strategies of the culture-loaded words adopted by thetranslator in the translation process from the perspective of Skopostheorie.Zhonghua Book Company’s Yu Dan Lunyu Xinde was based on Yu Dan’s speeches in the programme.According to the China Press and Publishing Journal, Yu Dan Lunyu Xinde had been translated intotwenty-eight language and thirty-four versions by2012. Its sales have already surpassed340thousand inwhich the English version has been sold out in half a year after publishing. This is a successful case ofChinese culture “going globalâ€. The purpose of the English version is to introduce Chinese culture andConfucianism to the common western readers. Giving consideration to the translation purpose, theculture-loaded words in Xinde are classifies, and then the factors influencing translation strategies ofculture-loaded words are analyzed. By applying various exemplifications, the author probes into thetranslation strategies adopted by the translator according to the different culture-loaded words.The findings demonstrate that the Skopostheorie applies to interpret the translation of culture-loadedwords. The success of the English version is largely due to the translator who can reasonably adopttranslation strategies in order to cope with all kinds of culture-loaded words, which spreads the Chineseculture and Confucianism furthest.
