Studies On The Loanwords In The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (Edition5-6)

Vocabulary, which is very significant, is the most sensitive and alterable part ofthe language. Loanwords which is the testimony of the society’s development and thecarrier of the alien culture, have been widely used in various fields. TheContemporary Chinese Dictionary includes Loanwords derived from many languageswith the perspective of the general use. This thesis chooses the Loanwords inContemporary Chinese Dictionary (Edition5-6), as the discussing object, thendescribes and analyzes the Loanwords, and summarizes the features and absorption ofloanwords in order to provide reference for the study of the Loanwords and for therevision of relevant books.Based on the theory of Language contact, Chinese lexicology, Modern semanticsand Social linguistics, this thesis describes and analyzes the Loanwords adopting themethods of statistic and description.This thesis is divided into seven parts.The first part is the introduction which introduces the research background, andthe research significance. This part recommends the study of the Loanwords, theContemporary Chinese Dictionary, the Loanwords in Contemporary ChineseDictionary, and then introduces the theoretical basis, research methods, researchcontent and the source of corpus.The second part is the study of the common Loanwords in ContemporaryChinese Dictionary (Edition5-6). Based on the rich corpus, it analyzes the401Loanwords from the perspective of etymology, the ways of borrowing and thesemantic category comprehensively, presenting the whole appearance of Loanwords.The third part is the study of the new Loanwords in Contemporary ChineseDictionary (Edition6). This part takes the same research ideas as the previous part toanalyzes the40new Loanwords, describing the basic situation of the new Loanwords.The fourth part is the study of the revised Loanwords in Contemporary ChineseDictionary (Edition5-6). This part contrasts the90revised Loanwords from theperspective of defining metalanguage, the etymology, the compilation style, thephonetics and the punctuation, etc. summarizing the revision of the Loanwords in thedictionary.The fifth part is the statistics of the Loanwords’ using frequency. This partanalyzes the whole Loanwords’ using frequency based on the data from Webresources, and concludes the features of both the common Loanwords and the newLoanwords.The sixth part is the features and the inappropriate portion of Loanwords in theContemporary Chinese Dictionary. This part systematically summarizes the featuresof the Loanwords, including the revision of the Loanwords and the statistics of theLoanwords’ using frequency, and points out the inappropriate portion of individualrevision. The seventh part is the conclusion of this thesis. This part introduces the maincontent, pointing out the innovation of this paper then the limitations. The innovativepoint of the thesis: the establishment of the Loanwords corpus of the ContemporaryChinese Dictionary and the statistics of the Loanwords’ using frequency based onWeb resources.
