As a branch of Chinese Northern dialect, the Northeastern dialect is characterized by itsconcise, vivid, humorous, bold and imaginative nature. It plays an important role in theformation of Mandarin. Yet in comparison with the abundant studies on the pronouns in otherChinese dialects, the study of the pronouns in the northeastern dialect falls behind. This thesis attempts to present accurate and detailed description and analysis of thedemonstrative pronouns--a part of the pronoun system--in the Northeastern dialect. The thesisaims at providing reliable materials for subsequent studies on the Northeastern dialect. The demonstrative pronouns in the Northeastern dialect are primarily composed with“this” and “that”. Affixes are added to these two basic elements, and thus form various setphrases which express different tones and sentiments. Some of the demonstrative pronouns inthe Northeastern dialect have no equivalences in Mandarin so they can only be explained withother phrases. The cohabiting society formed by multiple immigrants adopts the foreign authoritativedialects. Due to the special geographic location of the Northeast China, the native residenceonly includes the minority ethnic groups like Nvzhen people, Korean people and Mongolianpeople. Most of the Han people are military officers from different places and their families, which makes the Northeastern dialect under a large influence of the Beijing commonlanguage. The Northeastern dialect borrows words and expressions from the Beijing dialectand keeps some of the common expressions of minority languages like Nvzhen language,Korean language and Mongolian. In the modern history,Russia and Japan colonize theNortheast culturally by using their force to achieve language assimilation. Also, the long-termcohabitation of foreign immigrants with the Northeastern residence brings certain influenceon the local people’s language.
