Since China became the world’s second largest airline transportation system,Chinese airline companies have signed the GAAAA(Global Airline Alliance AdherenceAgreement). Their management model has also changed from operating internationalroutes independently, to a new era of code-sharing, cooperation based, internationaloperations. This requires both service content and service quality of airline servicepersonnel to meet international standards. As a result, new challenges are being faced byEnglish teaching of the civil aviation service management major at HVTI. According tothe airline companies where most of students have their internship, lack of Englishlistening and speaking ability is becoming one of the main developmental challenges ofaviation service students. In fact, the English capabilities of current students of civilaviation service management majors at HVTI are below acceptable international levels.Most students have a burning desire to learn English well, hoping to become qualifiedcivil aviation service personnel.This thesis chose English for Civil Aviation Service as a subject, conducted athorough study of ECAS course design and provided suggestions for solving existingproblems, hoping to help improve the teaching effect of ECAS courses for civil aviationservice majors.As a branch of ESP branch, systematic studies of ECAS are rare. This research isbased on ESP course design theory at HVTI, collecting information on ECAS coursedesign at HVTI, using questionnaires, informal interviews, press ads and teachingmaterials. Subjects of this research were194sophomore students of the civil aviationservice school at CQHLHVTI (Chongqing Hai Lian Higher Vocational TechniqueInstitute), including three majors; aviation service management, security service andflight attendant, plus six ECAS teachers and40employees of the aviation serviceindustry who graduated from CQHLHVTI. Only24student questionnaires were invalid,providing170valid questionnaires for the study.Based on the needs analysis theory, this study analyzed survey results from the fourprimary stages of course design: syllabus design, teaching materials, teaching methodology and evaluation systems. These four aspects were discussed from atheoretical aspect and their application to ECAS teaching.The survey shows the students, teachers and on-the-job personnel all agree that theECAS course is very necessary. But, according to feedback information from thestudents, the ECAS course they had taken did not satisfy their needs and the learningeffect was unsatisfactory. Several problems were discovered, including students havingpoor EGP (English for General purpose) skills, no student needs analysis beingperformed before each ECAS course design by the teachers and lack of a sense forself-study by the students.Therefore, to improve the ECAS teaching effect, it is necessary to perform a needsanalysis of the students during the course design and constantly adjust the coursecontent to improve it and to improve the learning efficiency of ECAS students.The result of this research aims to propose suggestions for ECAS course design ofcivil aviation service majors at HVTI, not to design an ECAS course, per se.
