| In recent years, passengers’ demand for on-board entertainment is increasing, while the well-developed Ka-band broadband satellite service abroad is still at the stage of market introduction. In order to standardize and guide the development and airworthiness modification of airborne avionics products of Ku satellite antenna and Ka satellite antenna,American Aeronautical Radio Incorporation(ARINC)has specially formulated ARINC 791 Standard. All the translation examples contained in this report are from ARINC 791 Standard. This report is based on the translation of Chapter 2 to Chapter 10 of ARINC 791 Part 1:Mark I Aviation Ku-Band and Ka-Band Satellite Communication System recently published by ARINC.Under the guidance of translation shift theory put forward by Catford, the selected examples here are mainly divided into class shifts, structure shifts, unit shifts and intra-system shifts. In terms of class shifts, the shifts of nouns into adjectives, nouns into verbs, prepositions into verbs are discussed here;On structure shifts, the shifts between active voice and passive voice, between post-attribute and pre-attribute as well as between affirmation and negation are studied;concerning unit shifts, the shifts from English lexis to Chinese phrases, from English phrases to Chinese terms, from English phrases to Chinese sentences are described;in the aspect of intra-system shifts, how to determine the exact meaning of English abbreviations and technical terms in Chinese system is demonstrated here.Civil aviation standard texts focus on delivering the meaning, rather than the equivalence of structure. Therefore, the translation quality can be greatly improved both in terms of readability and expression accuracy by shifting parts of speech, shifting sentence focus, and shifting sentence units in spite of the sacrifices in sentence structure.Throughout this translation process as well as the writing of the report, the author expects to provide technical reference to professionals in the specific industry and contribute to enriching the Chinese translation research of civil aviation communication texts. |
