As the bitrhplace of China’s modern industry, Shanghai has a lot of valuableindustrial heritage, which is the epitome of its urban development and an importantpart of the city’s cultural heritage. However, during the rapid urbanization process,people did not pay enough attention to the industrial heritage and industiral heritage isdisappearing.The situation of protecting and adaptive use of industrial heritage isworrying. The reason of it is people’s lack of deep understanding of the value andsignificance of the industrial heritage. Based on this,the author puts the284sites ofShanghai’s industrial heritage as research objects. By literature review and ifeldsurveys and means of geography sotfware ARCGIS, the author makes analysis of the’period of Shanghais industrial heritage, the temporal spatial distribution ofShanghai’s industrial heritage, the evolution and functions of Shanghai’s industrialheritage, the modes of adaptive use of Sha’nghais industrial heritage, impact on the’region after activating use of Shanghais industrial heritage, aiming at improving thetheory about industrial heritage from the perspective of geography as well asproviding references and help for the governments both in Shanghai and other cities inChina.Firstly, the author makes connotation definition and deifned the content andscope of the industrial heritage, and according to this, relevant studies both home andabroad were reviewed.Secondly, the distribution status of Shanghai’s industrial heritages, spatial andtemporal evolution were analyzed. From the time perspective,industrial heritagesfrom period1840to1949accounted for the vast majority of Shanghai’s totalindustiral heritages, and the number of the industiral heritages from period1913to1937is the largest; With the time going on,Shanghai,s industiral heritages graduallyexpanded from the downtown areas to its outreach and eventually throughout the city;industrial heritages from period1840to1949mainly exists in the downtown area(Huangpu District. Hongkou District, Xuhui District, etc.); industrial heritages from period1949to1978exists in Zhabei, Baoshan,Minhang,Jinshan and PudongDistirct. Within the whole city,industrial heritages almost lies throughout the city,but the distribution is uneven, presenting condensed state. The downtown of Shanghaiis the hot zone with lots of industiral heritages, while other districts are non-hot zoneswith less industiral heritages. Focus on the centre of the downtown, the industiralheritage is distirbuted along the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek,just like a ribbon.And the interchange of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek lies most industrialheritages. The distribution of industiral heritage presents seven "coer", in addition tothe high-density "core" of Interchange of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, thereare other six "core", respectively lies in the southeast and southwest of HuangpuDistirct, southeast of Hongkou District, southeast of Yangpu Distirct, notrh of PutuoDistrict,northwest of Pudong District. The sites of Shanghai’s Industrial Heritageswas originally a place for industiral production, the roar of machinery and workingscene is the first cultural landscape, the function is to produce goods initially; Due tourban economic restructuring and development, some types of industry had to bestopped, closed, transferred or relocated, leading to the appearance of industrialheritages; industiral heritages during this time lose the original production functions,while other functions and values had not yet been excavated, in function of thestagnation phase;At the age of the21st century, people are inlfuenced by the newurban development concept, and the economic, historical, cultural values of industiralheritages are gotten mined; The function of industrial heritages has been replaced andthey begin to play an important role in creative industry, resident’s leisure, touirsmand other aspects.Thirdly, the article summairzes ifve modes of adaptively using Shanghai’sindustrial Heritages,thus creative industrial park mode, tourist-expeirence mode,public urban recreation-and-leisure-space mode, public cultural facilities mode,fashion cultural-and-commercial center mode; Based on this, the author analyzed thepositive impact on city’s economy, urban landscape, image of the city or region, urbanleisure and city’s context by adaptively using of the industrial Heritage. Besides, theauthor takes the riverside areas of Yangpu District as an example to elaborate the the evolution of industrial heritage and its impacts on the region.Finally, on the basis of the previous text, the author drew some basic conclusionsabout Shanghai’s industrial heritage’s spatial and temporal changes and its impacts,while noting the limitations of the study and further research directions.
