According to Chinese International Education and the textbook compiling, this thesis analyzes The Guide to Kuan Hua, written by two Japanese translate students Wu Qitai and Zheng Yongbang in1881, and its English version translated by Lionel Charles Hopkins in1889.The first and second chapters introduce the background of the books, the authors as well as the research of the Chinese international education situation.Then The Guide to Kuan Hua and Hopkins’English version The Guide to Kuan Hua, a Translation of the Kuan Hua Chin Nan with an Essay on Tone and Accent in Pekinese and a Glossary of Phrases are introduced on aspects of target readers, the content, the structure and different versions information.The next three chapters are phonetic teaching, vocabulary teaching, and grammar teaching of these two books. The phonetic teaching introduces the initial, final systems, especially the tone teaching by Hopkins. As for the vocabulary teaching, the books’vocabulary includes colloquial vocabulary, practical vocabulary and the stylistic distinct vocabulary. While Hopkins’vocabulary teaching focused on the Glossary of phrases which is from the original book. The grammar teaching refers to the study of verb-complement construction and interrogative sentences, and mainly analysis these two grammar points in two books.The last chapter based on the above research gives an overall estimation of two books, in which advantages and disadvantages of every aspect are listed and illustrated.
