As a process of information transformation and transmission in the samelanguage or among different languages, translation is inclined to be affected byvarious factors in practical process. Therefore, it is of great significance to deal withthese factors well and to spare no efforts to bring out the best transformation andtransmission of information, which is closely related to choices of translationstrategies. Thus, this report is based on the English to Chinese translation text of the thirdchapter and the first section of the fourth chapter of Applied Linguist at NewcastleUniversity Professor Vivian Cook’s book Second Language Learning and LanguageTeaching. This report is inclined to explore the choices of translation strategies of thetranslated version from the perspective of information theory, aiming at finding theguidance effect of translation strategies on practical translation. This report explainsinformation theory and its passing mode as well as the definitions, influence and useprinciples of foreignization and domestication. It also analyses the influence of thecombination of information theory and translation strategies during translationprocess. Then the report tends to explore the choices of translation strategies of suchkind of informative text specifically from those two aspects, namely words andsentences. In terms of words, it mainly refers to the translation of proper names andprofessional terms; while in terms of sentences, it chiefly means the translation oflong sentences and a short poem.In this way, based on translator’s practical translation experience and thetranslated version, this report is inclined to explore translator’s proper selection oftranslation strategies from the perspective of information theory and to settle the keyand different problems from words and sentences appeared during the process oftranslation, in order to achieve the goal of transmitting information of the source text accurately and efficiently to target readers. Though defects inevitably exist in thisreport, it is hoped that it may be a bit useful for study of the combination ofinformation theory and translation.
