With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization in China, a great deal ofsurplus rural labor is forced to enter the city. However, by the restriction of binary system inChinese urban and rural areas, many difficulties exist in migrant workers’ welfare, children’seducation and family economic conditions. They have to leave their children in the countryside, and entrust them to others to be attended, then it turns out to be a large number of rural childrenleft behind. With the increase of floating population in our country, rural left-behind childrenhave become a huge special group.Based on the field research, by using empirical research, literature method, interviewmethod, quantitative and qualitative analysis, the paper randomly selects rural left-behindchildren from six provinces, namely, Hunan, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang, Hebeiprovince etc. The rural left-behind primary students who are relatively live in those cities andprovinces in third to the sixth grades will be tested with questionnaire of SCL-90.The paperunderstands completely the psychological health level of the current rural left-behind children;further it explores their common psychological problems; elaborates the reasons for theproblems, and then study countermeasures on psychological problems of rural left behindchildren from the family, school, government, community and other aspects. According to theresults of the survey, the mental health level of rural left-behind children is significantly lowerthan the national standard. Compared to the normal pupils all over the country, it hassignificant differences in somatization, obsessive-compulsive, anxiety, hostility andpsychoticism; and also in somatization, depression, phobia anxiety with the gender comparisonamong them. However, according to the comparison between the primary students of middlegrade (grade three or four) and high grade (grade five or six) from rural left-behind children, itshows that there are significant differences in five factors of somatization, depression, anxiety, hostility and fear. The severity of rural left-behind children in middle grade is higher than that in high grade, and the reason is various. Firstly, the school doesn’t pay enough attention tothem. Secondly, being away from parents caused the lack of affection as well as familyeducation. For the children in the crucial period of growth and development, all those lead totheir psychological distress. Introversion, anxiety and depression, emotional instability, psychology, ethics and attention deficit are the common psychological problems of ruralleft-behind children. These problems worried not only the migrant peasant workers but also people in socialcircles. Left-behind children in rural areas are also the builders and successors of socialism, aswell as the reserve army of the new socialist countryside construction. Their healthy growth isreally about China’s future, the prosperous of our country, and the construction of a newsocialist countryside. We must integrate the power from every part of society, from family toschool, from the community to the government, and try as we can, while each performs theirduties. Make the concerted efforts to create a harmonious and healthy environment for themental health growth of rural left-behind children.
