| The research on Chin P’ing Mei has received a remarkable achievement in overseas Sinology. In particular since the1970s, it has emerged a large number of scholars in this field. Andrew H.Plaks, with his inventive research on text study and text interpretation, he has become a leading role in Chin P’ing Mei study in the western world. In this paper, the author will focus on Andrew H.Plaks’ study on Chin P’ing Mei under the research vision of "complementary bipolarity". Andrew H.Plaks has uncovered the characters about the structure arrangement, character setting, and the ideological connotations of Chin P’ ing Mei. Also by quoting the findings on "complementary bipolarity" from other domestic and foreign scholars, the author will make a correct evaluation about the "complementary bipolarity" theory and its usage in classic Chinese novel writing.On the basis of Andrew H. Plaks’ research about "complementary bipolarity" and the original text of Chin P’ing Mei, the research approach about this dissertation is from discussing the details in the text to unveiling the theoretical reasons, and finally putting forward the new findings. First, systemizing Andrew H. Plaks’academic works, and making an interception of "complementary bipolarity". Using this new sight to reconstruct and interpret the Chin P’ing Mei text. Second, making a comparison between Chinese and western cultures and putting the "complementary bipolarity" concept in Western literature and classic Chinese literature to conducted a comprehensive study about Chin P’ing Mei. Third, summarizing the views from other domestic and foreign scholars to support or oppose Andrew H. Plaks’ studies and making a correct evaluation on the theory of "complementary bipolarity" propounded by Andrew H. Plaks. |
