When thriving up with a higher international status in this globalized world, China isbecoming a host for more and more high-profile international conferences. Thus, morequalified interpreters are in desperate need. As foreign studies departments and colleges inChina are having more interpreting courses and programs, the quality of interpreters andinterpretation teaching have become an important subject for the research and teaching ofinterpretation. The effectiveness in interpreting relies on the faithfulness to the original text. However, when transferring information from one language to another, interpreters must takethe differences between the two languages into full consideration. Chinese is a paratacticlanguage while English is a hypotactic one, which leads to the feature that Chinese does nothave as many cohesive devices as English does. To make the interpretation logical andcohesive, we should add appropriate cohesive devices in Chinese to English consecutiveinterpretation. This paper reviews the previous studies on Chinese-English contrast studiesand cohesion theory in order to point out the importance of cohesive device in interpreting.Through the case study of practical interpreting texts, this paper also summarizes thecategories of strategies dealing with cohesion in interpretation, and tries to offer suggestionsto make interpretation more cohesive and logical.
