In the1980’s, Xinjiang film with ethnic characteristics had become an uniquelandscape in Chinese film industry. Xinjiang film was featured by minority groups’interesting life story and specific natural and cultural landscape, producing manypopular works and attracting large number audiences inside and outside Xinjiang.After1990’s, Xinjiang film faded from public view, but some films still got variousprofessional film awards. Since the21st century, Xinjiang film mainly undertakes thetask of promoting the Party’s policies, expressing advanced culture of variousminority groups of Xinjiang and setting up new image of Xinjiang. However,Xinjiang film during this period also encounters difficulty that it fails to capture thehearts of audiences when it attempts to achieve the task. Major task faced by Xinjiangfilm at present is how to make audience walk into the cinema again and gainrecognition so as to accomplish propaganda task better. Based on the collection ofpredecessors’ academic achievements, this essay systematically sorts out Xinjiangfilm’s development history which begins from reform and opening up, takes thedevelopment of Indian commercial film as reference and attempts to find a solutionfor current development predicament of Xinjiang film. This essay mainly includes three parts: the first part mainly discusses the currentdevelopment status and difficulties of Xinjiang film and discusses the developmentdifficulties encountered by Indian film in the1980’s. The second part mainly statesXinjiang film’ successful experience in the1980’s as well as unprecedented successfulexperience gained by India in new century after hard times. From the verticalperspective, comparison between success and failure of Xinjiang film in differentperiods digs out Xinjiang film’s own development advantage; from the lateralperspective, comparison between Xinjiang film and Indian film provides Xinjiangfilm with a set of successful experience of commercial film to attract audience. Uponthe above analysis, the third part of the essay develops discussion from the perspective of regional characteristics, cultivation of film talent, development of filmindustry, etc. and explores future development direction of Xinjiang film. The essay isnot about discussion of strengths and weaknesses between Xinjiang film and Indianfilm, because the two are located at different levels: Xinjiang film belongs to art film,Indian film is mainly in the pursuit of commercialization. The reason that this papereduces discussion of Indian film is to provide Xingjian film with some experiences oncommercial development for reference through successful development model ofIndian commercial film. Xinjiang film’s development at commercialization level willbe conducive to regaining ordinary’s favor and conducive to achieving politicalpropaganda.
