With the development of economy and the communication between differentcountries, the translation between different languages has become an importantquestion. Translation has become an important major and a kind of technology. Theanalysis of text is very important in the process of translation. While the theme, rhemeand thematic structure in functional linguistics has made great contribution to theanalysis of text. This kind of contribution is achieved by the cutting of theme andrheme. Through that the interrelations between sentences and the rules for informationdistribution are obvious. In the translation and teaching of text, the application ofthematic progressive patterns can not be ignored. By theme and thematic progressivepatterns, we can better understand the original text. The better understanding of theoriginal text is the first step of a good translation. But theme and thematic progressionare studied in the point of English. There are many different aspects between Englishand Chinese. Typologically, Chinese is a topic-prominent language. So in the processof translation, between English and Chinese, we can’t simply understand English textby theme and thematic progression. We should also pay attention to the topic-prominentcharacteristic of Chinese and make the conversion between TR and TC, so that we canachieve the best effect of translation. At the same time, the difference that existsbetween English and Chinese should also be noticed. Only when we have acomprehensive understanding about the structural difference between English andChinese can we make an ideal conversion between TR and TC.In chapter one of this thesis, the historical study of TR and the discussion of TRfrom scholars of different countries will be discussed. So that something importantabout TR will be introduced simply. At the same time, the history of TC and thelearning results of scholars from different countries are also studied. In chapter two, theeffects of Theme and Rheme in English and Chinese are discussed. It is mainly aboutthe classification of Theme. TC mainly appears in Chinese. TC in isolated sentencesand discourse are respectively studied. Through the study of TR and TC, the fact thatwe can’t simply transfer Theme and Rheme of English into Chinese is found. As it is mentioned above, Chinese is a kind of topic-prominent language. As long as there istranslation, the problem of making conversion between TR and TC cannot be avoided.Under this condition, the structural difference between English and Chinese should alsobe studied. So in chapter three, the structural difference between English and Chinese ismainly researched. It also includes two parts: the syntactical level and the discoursallevel. This is the basic study of this part. Through the study of the first three chapters,in chapter four the concept of equivalence in translation is firstly studied. Then muchattention is paid to the significance of TR and TC in text. At last some rules of theconversion between TR and TC are the most important thing. The aim of this thesis is to break through the present study and discussin and tobreak the strict bondage of TR and TC to translation between English and Chinese. Thetopic-prominent characteristic of Chinese can be used to find the relationship and someswitching mechanisms between TR and TC. So that the theory of this aspect can beimproved and perfected. At the same time the more important thing is to use thefindings to direct the translation practice. To achieve the best translation effects is therealistic meaning of this article.
