The Loss And The Remedy Of Structural Coherence In E-C Translation

With texts as the ultimate unit of translation, this thesis presents a detailed research on the unique textual coherence in English achieved through English structure and also on the difficulty this specific coherence has brought to E-C translation since structural coherence is not that common in Chinese due to basic differences between these two languages. As a matter of fact, structural coherence is often lost or ignored in the practice of E-C translation, resulting in mistaken versions of Chinese translations and thus requiring a remedy for the loss in Chinese texts.So to avoid making those mistranslations, it is very important to comprehend structural coherence in an English text in the first place and then to try maintain and restore it in Chinese translations through various ways of remedy. And it is helpful in finding out solutions by probing into the causes of this problem in E-C translation, such as English"Hypotaxis"vs. Chinese"Parataxis", and English as a"Chain Language"vs. Chinese as a"Block Language", etc..Based on basic language differences between these two languages categorized as the causes that contribute to the unique English structural coherence, we might use Catford's theory of"Textual Equivalence"including"translation shifts"to help discern and understand English structural coherence and also to bring some clues and ideas to the remedy for the loss of English structural coherence in Chinese translations.This thesis then is devoted to the application of Catford's theory in making right Chinese translations of English structural coherence and also, with demonstrations, to the sorting of some specific categories of English structural coherence which are easily lost; meanwhile, for easier comparison and comprehension, it provides a suggested version of Chinese translation which pays attention to this problem. Of course, the list of categories is far from being closed and open to addition.
