A Report On C-E Translation Of The Rise Of The Middle Class In Contemporary China(Excerpt) Guided By The Theme-Rheme Theory And Thematic Progression Patterns

This thesis is a report on the Chinese-English translation of The Rise of the Middle Class in Contemporary China.The cases are selected from Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of the book,which expound on the development of Chinese middle class in the early stage.As English and Chinese are different in terms of thematic structure and thematic progression patterns,it is vital to understand the structural differences and translate in a flexible way,thus guaranteeing a quality translation.Under the guidance of M.A.K.Halliday's theme-rheme theory and F.Danes' thematic progression patterns,this report explores the thematic structure of certain examples in the source text in the sequence of linear pattern,constant theme pattern,constant rheme pattern and intersection pattern.Based on the organization of the information,grammatical structure and means of expression found in the source text,corresponding thematic analyses will be conducted to extract the information,reorganize the structure and produce the translation accordingly.In this way,not only can a faithful and idiomatic target text be produced,but also appropriate strategies under different circumstances can be found.Focusing on the inner features and structural differences of the two languages,this study sheds some new light on the insurance of the quality of translation.
