As an important part of the Southeast-Asian Englishes Corpus (13BYY094), a state-funded project, the C-E news report translation of the Nanning government website has been carried out by the translators from Foreign Language College, Guangxi University for over a decade. The Nanning government website takes a leading place in internationalization six years in row among11capital cities in western provinces in China. However, the evaluation study on this project mainly concentrates on accuracy and completeness. The current researches on news translation focus more on edition and omission than that of amplification. Given the current situation, the author makes an attempt to systematically study the effectiveness of employment of amplification, one of the most frequently used strategies adopted in translation. In this thesis, the author adopted the text analysis method and carried out an observational study. Two research questions are to be answered:1) how are the amplifications in C-E news report translation classified?2) What are the functions and effects of the classified amplifications serve in C-E news report translation of the Nanning government website evaluated by the Cooperative Principle? After a careful observation of a whole year of2009’s news reports of the Nanning government website in Chinese and their English translation, the author indentifies a number of amplifications used by the translators in the translation and makes a detailed categorization. Proceeding from the Cooperative Principle coined by H.P. Grice, the effectiveness of the employment of amplifications is evaluated by observing or violating the maxims of CP from a pragmatic perspective. The major findings of this thesis are:(1) Six types of amplifications are classified, namely, conceptual amplifications, structural amplifications, logical amplifications, rhetorical amplifications, background amplifications, and redundant amplifications.(2) Most of the identified amplifications are effective in contributing a faithful, smooth and complete delivery of the information in the original text. However, redundant amplifications and unnecessary adjective modifiers added into the translation result in ineffectiveness by making the translation prolix and even faulty. In the study, limitations also exist in that:(1) the selected examples are not the most perfect and typical ones.(2) Some identified examples of amplifications do not fit any category.(3) The theory might be untenable from the perspectives of pragmatics. It is hoped that the findings in the thesis will be helpful for the translation learners as well as for the teaching of translation and also give some hints to further studies in the aspect. This research is aimed for the target readers of the official website of Nanning government, which is of real significance in the service of regional politics, economy and publicity.
