The special relationship between Chinese characters and Chinese languagedecides that teaching Chinese characters will become an important issue in the area ofteaching Chinese as a foreign language. In the last20years, more and moretheoretical results are presented and teaching practice has made great progress. Butfor now, there still exists lots of theoretical issues and practical problems. This isbecause that we do not have a clear understanding of the characteristics of Chinesecharacters, we do not grasp the acquisition law of Chinese learners, and we do nothave effective teaching methods. We cannot deny the fact that the study of Chinesecharacters teaching is lagging behind in the process of teaching Chinese as a foreignlanguage.The primary stage of Chinese characters teaching is of great significance.Effective methods can help students to form awareness of Chinese characters, tomaster the learning rules of Chinese characters and to improve their Chinese languageproficiency. Therefore, this thesis focus on the primary stage of Chinese charactersteaching, takes philology research and second language acquisition theory asreference, reanalyses the characteristics of Chinese characters, uses the method oftheoretical analysis and questionnaire survey to explore the acquisition law of primarycharacters teaching, and tries to supplement the theory of Chinese characters teaching.On the basis of theoretical research, this thesis tries to apply theory into practice, andtries to provide proposals to primary characters teaching.This thesis includs five parts. The first part introduced the background of thetopic, pointed out the present situation of characters teaching, and introduced thecontent, methods and values of the thesis. The second part reviewed the theoretical results of the studies on Chinesecharacters teaching in the last20years, and pointed out the defects in those studies.The third part of the paper defines the timing, scope and content of primary stageof teaching Chinese, and made the characters tectonic theory, second languageacquisition theory as the theoretical basis of this research.The third part of the paper analyzed the characteristics of Chinese characters indepth, highlighted the features of characters in teaching, and tried to find abreakthrough in the initial stage of Chinese characters teaching.The forth part defines the timing, scope and content of primary stage of teachingChinese, discussed the acquisition law of primary characters teaching, and putforward an idea of primary Chinese characters teaching.The last part summarized the thesis briefly and pointed out there are still someshortcomings existed in the research, in the meantime, hope that there will be morecolleagues focus on the studies of Chinese characters teaching.
