The equal comparative sentence is one of the most common comparative sentences in the Chinese language. This thesis summarizes a great deal of research that has already been published, and reorganizes the definitions and classifications of the equal comparative sentence. Most Chinese people use equal comparative sentences as fluently and effortlessly as you would expect for native speakers, while others who are learning Chinese as a foreign language often make mistakes using the same sentences. To discover the reasons why, we consulted various existing theses and research. We also designed a survey which we named,’Learning the Grammatical Use of Equal Comparative Sentences’, which we then distributed among foreign students studying in Sichuan Normal University. There is already extensive research that has been gathered on the subject of comparative sentences, but specific analyses of ’equal’ comparative sentences are few and far between, especially in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. We studied the patterns of mistakes made in the surveys we collected so that we can offer some valuable suggestions to help foreign students study the equal comparative sentence as efficiently and effectively as possible.
